Channel Challenge Sailing Instructions

1. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS

1.1.  Notices to competitors will be posted on the Official Notice Board at the Derwent Sailing Squadron (DSS) up to the commencement of the first race or after this time on the Official Notice Board at the Kettering Yacht Club (KYC).

1.2.  For each race a boat shall submit a Crew Declaration including all persons on board that boat, noting the specific requirements of the Notice of Race (NoR) 6.

2. CHANGES TO THESE SAILING INSTRUCTIONS (SI) 

2.1.  Changes to the SIs, if any, shall be made in accordance with RRS 90.2 (c), and changes will be posted not later than two (2) hours prior to the 1st starting signal;

2.2.  Attention will be drawn to notices to competitors or changes to SIs by the display of code flag "L" from the DSS and/or the KYC flagpole; and

2.3.  Changes to these SIs may be advised on VHF Channel 81 for Race 2 and VHF Channel 73 for all other races.

3. SCHEDULE OF RACES 

3.1. The Regatta will be conducted in allocated Groups:

3.1.1.  Race 1 – Friday 17 January 2025 – Cygnet Beaupre Point to Kettering (Cat 7)

4. GROUPS AND HANDICAP CLASSES 

Groups and Handicap classes will be in accordance with NoR 7 and 9.

5. RECALLS 

Individual and general recalls shall be in accordance with RRS 29.

6. PROTESTS 

6.1. Protests documentation must be lodged with the KYC: 

6.1.1.  Race 1 and 2 protests shall be received no later than 12:00 on Saturday 18 January 2025;

6.1.2.  Race 3 protests shall be received no later than one (1) hour after the last boat finishes Race 3; and

6.1.3.  Race 4 & 5 protests shall be received no later than 16:30 on Monday 20 January 2025.

6.2. Protest hearings will be held at a location organised by the KYC 

7. SCORING 

Scoring will be in accordance with NoR 10.

8. SAFETY REGULATIONS AND INSPECTIONS 

8.1.  The minimum required safety category for each race shall be in accordance with NoR 8;

8.2.  Special regulations 5.01 will apply for the Regatta;

i) Special Regulations 5.01.1 (g), life jackets, shall apply for all boats competing in Race 2 – Hobart to Kettering Race; and 

ii) Special Regulations 5.01.1 (j), life jackets, shall apply for all boats without lifelines competing in Race 2 – Hobart to Kettering Race.

9. CREW 

9.1. The minimum number of crew for Race 2 and Race 3 - Hope Island and Zuidpool (excluding Green Island course) is three (3), unless dispensation has been applied for in writing and granted before close of entries at 17:00 on Thursday 16 January 2025. At least three crew members must be over the age of eighteen (18) years for Race 2 & 3. Minimum ages are taken from the start date of the Regatta. 

9.2.  The minimum number of crew for Race 1, 3 (Green Island), 4 and 5 is two (2).

9.3.  For each race a boat shall submit a Crew Declaration inclusive of all persons on board that boat noting the specific requirements of NoR 6.

10. RISK STATEMENT

RRS 3 states: “The responsibility for a boat's decision to participate in a race or to continue to race is hers alone”. By participating in this event each competitor agrees and acknowledges that sailing is a potentially dangerous activity with inherent risks. These risks include strong winds and rough seas, sudden changes of weather, failure of equipment, boat handling errors, poor seamanship by other boats, loss of balance on an unstable platform and fatigue resulting in increased risk of injury. Inherent in the sport of sailing is the risk of permanent, catastrophic injury or death by drowning, trauma, hypothermia or other causes.

11. RESPONSIBILITY 

11.1.  All those taking part in the Regatta do so at their own risk and responsibility.The KYC, regatta sponsors and their respective officers, employees, volunteers and members, accept no liability for any injury, loss or damage that may be suffered by any competitor;

11.2.  The KYC or their agents are not responsible for the seaworthiness of a boat, participant or third party before, during or after any race; and

APPENDIX A – RACE 1 – CYGNET - BEAUPRE POINT TO KETTERING RACE          
                   FRIDAY 17 JANUARY 2025

 A.1 OFFICIAL BOATS

A.1.1 Start Boat – Cygnet - Beaupre Point start - Race Committee Boat – “Huntress” 

A.1.2 Finish Boat – Kettering finish – Race Committee Boat – “Huntress”. 

A.2. RADIO COMMUNICATION

All radio transmissions shall be made on VHF Channel 73. 

A.3. START LINE - CYGNET BEAUPRE POINT 

The Start Line will be between the flag on the Committee Boat 'Huntress. in the vicinity of Beaupre Point. 

A.4 FINISH LINE - KETTERING 

The Finish Line will be between a flag on the Committee Boat 'Huntress' and an orange inflatable buoy south of Little Oyster Cove. 

A.5. SHORTENED COURSE 

A.5.1 RRS Rule 32.1 (d) is amended by adding "or for any other the reason the Race Officer considers appropriate"

A5.2 All boats shall keep a listening watch on VHF Channel 73 for announcements regarding a shortennd course. 

A.6. STARTING INSTRUCTIONS

A.6.1 Starting Signals will be in accordance RRS 26

A.6.2 The Starting Signal will be five (5)minutes after a Groups Warning Signal

 A.7. RETIREMENTS 

Any boat retiring must promptly report the arcumstances to the Race Committee Boat on VHF Channel 73. 

A.8. TIME LIMIT 

Any boat not finishing before 17:00 on the Friday 17 January 2025 will be scored "did not finish" (DNF). This modifies RRS 35.

APPENDIX B – RACE 2 SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS
                    FRIDAY 17 JANUARY 2025 – HOBART TO KETTERING

B.1.  RACING AT NIGHT

B1.1 Between sunset and sunrise, when a boat cannot determine with certainty what tack the other boat is on, they shall keep clear of that boat. Competitors are reminded that part of the definition of “room “in the RRS includes taking into account the existing conditions (including visibility). Official sunset shall be 20:48 and official sunrise shall be 05:54.

B.1.2 Any boat finishing, between sunset and sunrise, shall illuminate its sail number as it crosses the finish line.

B.2.  OFFICIAL BOATS

B2.1 Start Boat – “RL Bugg” – DSS Committee Boat
 
B.2.2 Race Committee Boat (Finish) – “Uncle Robin”.
 
B.3.  RADIO COMMUNICATION

B3.1 All radio transmissions shall be made on VHF Channel 81.
 
B.3.2 All boats shall complete a pre-race radio check on VHF Channel 81. On Friday 17 January 2025, between 17:00 and 17:20, each boat will be called, in alphabetical order until the completion of the radio check. At this radio check a boat will confirm its intention to race and confirming the number of persons on board.
 
B3.3 Boats failing to respond to radio check or are inaudible will be scored “did not start” (DNS).
 
B3.4 The Race Committee Boat will keep a continuous listening watch on VHF Channel 16/81. Competitors are
reminded that in the event of an emergency all boats should convert to dual watch VHF Channel 16/81.
 
B.4. START LINE – HOBART
 
B4.1 A Committee Boat flying the DSS Burgee will be anchored in the vicinity of the the DSS permanent mark, approximately 0.5nm NE of Wrest Point.
 
B.4.2 The Start Line will be between the Orange Flag on the Committee Boat and an orange Inflatable mark.
 
B.5 FINISH LINE – KETTERING
 
B5.1 An occulting amber light on the KYC Committee Boat (“Uncle Robin” for those with AIS), which will be anchored in the general area of Little Oyster Cove and a mark exhibiting a flashing light approximately 200m in an easterly direction off the KYC Committee Boat.
 
B5.2 Boats finishing between sunset and midnight shall illuminate its sail number as it crosses the finish line and advise the boat name by hailing the finish boat as it crosses the finish line.
 
B.6.  SHORTENED COURSE

The Race Committee Boat may nominate a shortened course if necessary and competitors will be notified on VHF Channels 81 then 73 commencing at five (5) minutes past the half hour at 22:35 of the approximate position of the Finish Line to be used.

B.7.  STARTING INSTRUCTIONS

B7.1 Starting Signals will be in accordance RRS 26

B7.2 All Groups will start together.

B7.3 A warning signal will be sounded at 17:25

B.8.  RETIREMENTS

Any boat retiring must promptly report the circumstances to the Committee Boat on VHF Channels 81 then
73 commencing at five (5) minutes past the half hour at 22:35 in accordance with
 
B.7. TIME LIMIT

Boats not finishing before midnight will be scored “did not finish”. This modifies RRS 35.
